Customizing Your Personal Information

People can view your personal information in an Identity window, which contains your avatar and personal information. You can view and edit your own information in the Edit My Identity dialog box. 

Viewing and Editing Your Personal Information

1. Open the Edit My Identity dialog box, by one of the following:

  • select Tools, Edit Identity
  • select the Edit Identity option in the shortcut menu on your presence.
  • select your name in the People Pane and press the Identity button
2. Optionally edit the displayed information. Use the Basic Info and About Me tabs to toggle between the panes.

3. Optionally change your picture, by doing as follows:

  • Select a library (Stock for avatars supplied by Virtual Places; Personal for your own avatars).
  • Press the Change... button.
  • For the Stock Library, the Open dialog displays, with the addition of an avatar gallery from which you can select an avatar. For the Personal Library, you can browse the directory structure for an appropriate avatar GIF file.

  • Note: You can add your own graphics to your personal library.
  • Select an avatar.
  • Press OK to exit the Open dialog box
4. Press OK to close the dialog box and save changes; press Cancel to close the dialog box without saving changes.

Adding Avatars to Your Personal Avatar Library

Virtual Places has supplied a gallery of avatars, which is installed in the location defined in the Preferences dialog box. In addition, you can add avatar graphics to your personal gallery (directory), as follows:

1. Prepare a graphic (48X64 pixel GIF) using an appropriate graphics package and/or scanner.

2. Using the file tools under your window system, move or copy the graphic you prepared to a directory you select for personal avatars

3. Set your personal avatar gallery in Virtual Places by editing your identity:
Open the Edit My Identity dialog box, by selecting Tools, Edit Identity.

  • Select the Personal Library.
  • Press the Change... button.
  • Browse the directory structure for the directory to which you copied your personal avatar(s).
  • Select a personal avatar.
  • Press OK to exit the Open dialog box.
The next time you open your personal avatar gallery, the correct directory will be selected.

Adding Avatars (with Moods) to Your Avatar Gallery

Virtual Places has supplied a gallery of avatars, each with four &quotmoods" which is installed in the location defined in the Preferences dialog box. When properly &quotinstalled" the new graphic will be displayed in its normal mood with other avatars in the gallery. When you change your avatar to the new graphic, the four moods will be available from the shortcut menu on your avatar.

You can add avatar graphics to the Virtual Places Stock Avatar Gallery as follows:

1. Prepare four graphics (each a 48X64 pixel GIF) using an appropriate graphics package and/or scanner.

2. Save the four graphics by the same name, appending an a (normal), b (happy), c (angry), or d (sad) to each. For example, if your name were Jane, you could name the four moods of your avatar as follows:

  • janea.gif
  • janeb.gif
  • janec.gif
  • janed.gif
3. Determine which directory contains Avatar Gallery on your system, by looking in the Directories tab of the Preferences dialog box.

4. Using the file tools under your window system, move or copy the graphics you prepared to the Stock Avatar Gallery.
