You can have a maximum of 5 nicknames per log in. In some cases you will find that you can not add a nickname. This is no bug or anything. It simply means that the nickname / handle is already taken. The problem is simply that Excite will not tell you it is already taken, when you try to add a taken handle. It will only do so for a new user.
