They're not some kind of a caffeine cult -- when people use the Java version of the chat software, they're represented by coffee cups. They can participate in any chat on the server, but they can't use or see any Avatars nor the Gestures. The gray face works similar but this user is using the Active-X Client of Virtual Places.
